Motosumo’s “Cycle for Change” initiative is a philanthropic project that aims to mitigate climate change by planting trees. Through the #TrainForTrees campaign, Motosumo has invited all its users, new and old, to join the movement and work out together for a purpose. The objective of this project is to raise awareness about the importance of tree-planting and encourage Motosumo users to take action. The intended result is to plant a maximum of 1,000 trees and make a real impact on climate change.

Objectives

The objectives of Motosumo’s “Cycle for Change” initiative are to encourage community building, promote positive change, and mitigate climate change through tree-planting. By inviting its users to join the movement and work out together for a purpose, Motosumo hopes to raise awareness about the importance of tree-planting and inspire more people to take action.

Leveraging its community to create an environmental benefit

“Motosumo is a community based-app. “TrainForTrees” is not a competition where individuals or gyms compete against each other to plant the most trees. We want to plant together, as one global community, one worldwide team, for maximum impact. The community feeling is important to our users and they push themselves harder when they train with others – either in the same room or virtually. By adding this extra layer to the workout experience, we’ll all end up doing something together for the greater good,” comments Kresten Juel Jensen, the CEO.

Supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being  — By promoting physical exercise through cycling workouts, Motosumo supports healthy lifestyles and well-being among its users.

SDG 4: Quality Education  — The initiative raises awareness about the importance of tree planting and climate change, indirectly contributing to environmental education.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities — Encouraging community building and promoting positive change, the project fosters a sense of shared responsibility for the environment.

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production — By linking calories burned to tree planting, Motosumo encourages more sustainable lifestyles and responsible choices for its users.

SDG 13: Climate Action — The primary focus of the initiative is to mitigate climate change by planting trees to absorb CO2 and combat soil erosion.

SDG 15: Life on Land — By planting trees, the project contributes to the preservation of ecosystems and the promotion of biodiversity, providing habitats for wildlife.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals — Motosumo collaborates with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant trees and works with its user community to promote sustainability and climate action.

How are rider calories captured?

Motosumo uses the sensors in smartphones to provide fitness data, including the number of calories burned during workouts.

Project results

The intended results of Motosumo’s “Cycle for Change” initiative are to plant a maximum of 1,000 trees, absorb CO2, provide habitats for wildlife, minimise the effects of flooding, and combat soil erosion. This programme was first launched in 2019 when the pledge was to fund the planting of 3,000 trees with Arbor Day Foundation. The Foundation has the ambition to plant 500 million trees by 2027 in areas where they’re needed most.

Gymtopia Comment

Motosumo’s “Cycle for Change” initiative is a positive step towards addressing climate change by promoting the importance of planting trees. By inviting its riders to work out together and contribute to a higher cause, Motosumo is emphasising the importance of community and team building in achieving positive change. The initiative’s pledge to plant a tree for every 5,000 calories burned by riders during live or on-demand cycling classes is a concrete way to make a difference. However, the maximum pledge of planting 1,000 trees seems modest, and there may be room for Motosumo to increase its commitment and make a more significant impact on climate change. We will be actively monitoring this project and hope that the Motosumo team, led by Kresten, the CEO, will scale up this initiative in future years.
